The Pilbara and the desert

The Pilbara landscape from the air

The Pilbara landscape from the air

The mountain ranges and desert of the Pilbara region of WA’s Northwest are a spectacular contrast of ochres, iron oxide reds and vivid blue skies.

When I was a child I lived in Marble Bar in the heart of the Pilbara. I would look out into the shimmering vista of red hills, white trees and dotted spinifex and wonder at the billowing serpents of dust rising behind invisible vehicles.

This red dust is also an inherent part of the Pilbara aboriginal’s rituals. In my paintings I aim to evoke this ancient and mystic landscape full of giant and sometimes invisible forces.
