Here is Margaret River during the day. There are the pools in the river and the water lilies. Magpies are flying through the forest. These are the lovely vivid daylight colours reflecting the warmth that you feel as you slow down and soak in the sun.

Here are two places that so many of us go to escape our routine. And relax. To me, the ships are our problems that can loom large when they are up close. Time and perspective sees them retreat to dots on the horizon.

Cottesloe is such a charming village. It sits beside a little forest of pine trees on the hill. There’s the beach in the distance. These are the ways we think about Cottesloe. And why we love it so much.

In this painting, we’re above the river looking across Melville to the ocean. You can see Canning Bridge in the foreground and Cottesloe and Rottnest in the distance. The houses moving through the picture express the language of people’s lives. Always changing, travelling and moving places.

On Canning Waters came into being after a conversation in the Studio with the Principal of Aquinas College. The painting looks across the Canning River and Salter Point towards the city, with the life of the river and land and the colour of the surrounding suburbs spilling over the school.

In this painting of Claremont, I’ve used colourful rows as metaphors for both houses and people – our community living together, connected and separate. Each person has their jewel-like colour and when you draw together all these colourful individuals, that’s when you get the vibrancy of village life. This is a homage to places created by the striving of individuals who live and work there.

A friend commented that this painting was a riot. That is exactly what I was after. I wanted to capture all the elements that excite and delight us in this landscape. What a wonderful and adventurous place Rottnest is. The passing ships are so mysterious with their colourful stacked containers. There’s the magic of Cottesloe Beach, whales, lighthouses and the movement of the clouds. And the metropolis of Fremantle, busy with its port, trains and excitement, watched over by Dingo. These places awaken my childhood sense of wonder.

Here is Fremantle. It reminds me so much of an Edwardian port village. It’s re-invented itself through the University and cafes. It’s been brought to life by the migrants who share their cafes, delis and generous hearts. There are so many surprises to open in this place. You can see the port, the lighthouses, the railway line, the park and the Ferris wheel. Add all to that, the cargo ships, the containers, Cottesloe and Dingo. Someone described this as Christmas in a landscape painting.

This painting is about Freshwater Bay, while Claremont and the surrounding suburbs cluster around the edge of the waterway like some modern version of a fishing village. I’m having some fun with the details of Claremont. The underpass, the big shops, the old hotel and the railway. I love the Claremont village, and dabbling it with the light, lines and movement. I love this gentle little corner of the world.

I’m really pleased with this painting, in particular the way the composition has come together. There’s the entrance to Claremont through the underpass. You can see the Claremont Quarter and the railway line. The village and the river are seamlessly connected in the soft morning light. Just follow the road down to the water. What I’m offering here is a fresh perspective on the familiar. We know these places but now we see them brand new.

This is about kids and their beach holidays. There are the whales coming in for a visit past Cottesloe and Rottnest. You can see the Dingo Flour sign, lighthouses and even the pretend smugglers cave at Bathers Beach. Giant cargo ships cruise in and out of the harbour. Really this is a children’s paradise.

Here are the enchanting landmarks that take us back to childhood and wonderment. It is a summer day. You are still while the clouds and water move around you. The building in the top right is the old salt store. Ever since I was a child this has always struck me as a funny sort of building. The reason the houses are painted like this is that over my life each one is like a book or a place. They’re individual destinations. You look down into the water and it is filled with fishes and rhythms and patterns.

You’ve got to be a local person to understand why the Dingo Flour logo is there. Maybe it’s as simple as the fact when you drive down the road, and you see the Dingo thing it is tremendous. It stands out. There aren’t many places in the world where something like this has evolved. I love the Dingo Flour dingo because it reminds me of is flour, flour bags, scones, cooking and caring for people.

I’ve seen parties and party products delivered to Rottnest. I’m making a simple statement that Rottnest is an excellent place for children. I’ve loaded up the container ships with presents just for fun. My children loved being over at Rottnest. At the bottom of the painting, you can see the pine trees of Cottesloe. My favourite part of this picture is the clouds. I just loved painting them.

There’s yellow Rottnest with the sun shining down and reflecting across the water. At the bottom of the picture, you can see the reef. The Dingo Flour logo means a lot to me because it reminds me of flour, flour bags, cooking scones, domesticity and caring for people. I had a lot of fun painting those clouds in this work. I love how clouds change. As they come and go, your view of the world is altered. I enjoy how all this movement plays out over the water. I am reminded of how bad times cloud over and block the light. They move away and things feel lighter once again. In this painting, I became very interested in textures on the surface of the water. In this painting, the whales are under the surface of the water as an outline.

I took the Manly Ferry one day and I was so surprised to see all the leafy areas jutting out into the harbour. I was thrilled to recognise the headlands that the early Australian Impressionists painted. It was like Streeton’s work come to life.

This is a sunset on the water. It’s meant to be after work, maybe 5:30, when you go down there in the summer. There are thunderclouds over the hills reflecting the sunset light down into the water. It is very restful at the end of the day. There’s a tranquillity about the boats moored there facing into the sea breeze. This is a wonderful place to live. It nourishes. Whatever troubles you have in your life, you can remember happiness by taking in this beautiful place.
