Driving through the town of Margaret River in the very early morning, when it’s still dark, you can see the buildings stand out like cards in the headlights. The water lilies are luminous and seemingly float above the water.

I’m using two blues, cyanine and ultramarine. When combined like this the blues interact with each other in changing ways. Sometimes the ultramarine will look like violet and sometimes the pthalo will look like green. It’s a way of trying to depict light levels so low that you can’t really tell what the colours are. You can’t see the trees in the darkness but at certain angles, they show up as lines and then disappear back into the painting.
