This is a rare mid-afternoon painting at Margaret River. We’re standing on the north bank looking downstream from the bridge. It is summertime.

We’re standing in a protected spot under the bridge where the passing traffic can’t see us. We are looking towards the karri trees and the log bridge that’s hidden by the peppermint trees in the middle ground. You can see the shadow of the bridge on the water.

We are standing in the very early morning in the summer. It’s about five or six o’clock. The sun is just coming up. It is shining underneath the karri trees and showing us a real blaze of leaf colour.

Just as Monet did, I’m using the bridge as a framing device between the more neutral colours at the top and the bottom. There’s a focus on the brilliance of the light that shines underneath the bridge.

This is slightly upstream from the township of Margaret River. The town bridge is around the corner and to the left. We are looking downstream. You can see the effects of the peppermint blossom on the pools.

We are standing in a Margaret River dawn. This is just upstream underneath the Bussell Highway bridge and we’re looking upstream to the fallen log footbridge that crosses the river.

This is a Margaret River morning scene. I have watched that karri tree grow for the past thirty years. It is my favourite river tree in this beautiful place.

We are standing in the late afternoon on a summers day. The light is hitting the outside of the leaves and reaching into the forest. The water is very warm.

We are looking upstream at dawn from the town bridge towards the fallen log footbridge in Margaret River. I could hear the sound of little red tails and wrens playing in the trees.
