I have a lovely memory of Rottnest. I am standing on the small jetty in Thomson Bay. A group of excited children are fishing for squid with their parents. It’s dark and I am looking back towards the settlement and the sea wall. All the houses have their lights on. You can see Board Cottage in the right foreground. There’s the boathouse with the green door there in the centre. The stars are playful because Rottnest is a place of delight and discovery for children.

I once saw a photo of a Venetian palace at night and I was struck by how much it reminded me of the night view at Rottnest. I was inspired by a particular summer evening when a group of children were having an utterly fantastic time trying to catch squid as they swam in and out of the light at Thomson Bay. There was a wonderful sense of excitement in that warm and safe evening.

South Perth is sitting there just across the water from all the towers of commerce and striving. People travel over to the city and then go home again. I’m wanting to show people a fresh perspective on where they live and work.  I’m hoping to bring that landscape alive. People may never have considered the relationship between the city and South Perth from this view. I hope they can feel some of the magic in all this life by the river.

This painting is all about the nightlife in Perth. You can see the city lights and headlights of cars as people move around the city. That’s why Northbridge is in the foreground because it has such vibrancy. I used to live just off to the right in West Perth and would walk to the city at night. It was a thrill for me because the movement and rhythm of car headlights would be illuminating the streets. To an artist like me, these waves of light are really something.

This is the river at first light on a summer’s morning. Maybe around five o’clock. I’m standing at the Bay View Lookout in Mosman Park. At first glance, the river looks like a plane of light. Over time the light plays across the different surfaces. This is a reflective time when the day is full of peace and wholehearted potential.

In this painting you can see Nedlands and the University of WA, and in the background Perth city. Claremont is over on the left, and you can see Keanes Point and Peppermint Grove Beach. I painted this during a time when I had obsession with pale paintings. I had intended to strip the colour right back, and I even started to do that. At that point, I stopped myself. This colour is enjoyable and spontaneous and fun, why should I take it away? The painting was just so nice that I couldn’t bring myself to do it.  I just wanted it to stay bright and colourful. It reflects my affection for these places and the colours of the water and sky.

I really love the Bay View Lookout in Mosman Bay. One day I was there during a sun shower. It was in the late afternoon. I was hoping for the light to hit the clouds that form over the hills and then for that light to shine down onto the water. To my surprise and delight, the sun shower produced a rich new light that shone into the blue of the rain. I love the patches of golden light breaking through here and there.

It’s late afternoon and it’s drizzling with rain. The setting sun is hitting the clouds, casting the light down onto the water. There’s a lot of moisture in the air and this makes the dark colours of the trees and suburbs even darker. It’s a very tranquil scene because the rain does tend to slow everything down. I’m really pleased with this painting. It is about driving through the town of Margaret River in the very early morning when it’s still dark. You see the buildings stand out like cards in the headlights. I’m using two blues, cyanine and ultramarine. When combined like this the blues interact with each other in changing ways. Sometimes the ultramarine will look like violet and sometimes the pthalo will look like green. It’s a way of trying to depict light levels so low that you can’t really tell what the colours are. You can’t see the trees in the darkness but at certain angles, they show up as lines and then disappear back into the painting.

In summer they sit there on the surface of the water. In winter the water flows swiftly. You see the lilies are pulled by the current, but they hold firm because they are anchored to the bottom by long tendrils. In much the same way life gets tough. A relationship is tested. At the same time, it remains an anchor so that we are not overwhelmed and swept away by the seasons and currents of life.

The Dingo Flour logo means a lot to me because it reminds me of flour, flour bags, cooking scones, domesticity and caring for people. I had a lot of fun painting those clouds in this work. I love how clouds change. As they come and go, your view of the world is altered. I enjoy how all this movement plays out over the water. I am reminded of how bad times cloud over and block the light. They move away and things feel lighter once again. In this painting, I became very interested in textures on the surface of the water. In this painting, the whales are under the surface of the water as an outline.

Here are the enchanting landmarks that take us back to childhood and wonderment. It is a summer day. You are still while the clouds and water move around you. The building in the top right is the old salt store. Ever since I was a child this has always struck me as a funny sort of building. The reason the houses are painted like this is that over my life each one is like a book or a place. They’re individual destinations. You look down into the water and it is filled with fishes and rhythms and patterns.

I’ve seen parties and party products delivered to Rottnest. I’m making a simple statement that Rottnest is an excellent place for children. I’ve loaded up the container ships with presents just for fun. My children loved being over at Rottnest. At the bottom of the painting, you can see the pine trees of Cottesloe. My favourite part of this picture is the clouds. I just loved painting them.

You’ve got to be a local person to understand why the Dingo Flour logo is there. Maybe it’s as simple as the fact when you drive down the road, and you see the Dingo thing it is tremendous. It stands out. There aren’t many places in the world where something like this has evolved. I love the Dingo Flour dingo because it reminds me of is flour, flour bags, scones, cooking and caring for people.

This is about kids and their beach holidays. There are the whales coming in for a visit past Cottesloe and Rottnest. You can see the Dingo Flour sign, lighthouses and even the pretend smugglers cave at Bathers Beach. Giant cargo ships cruise in and out of the harbour. Really this is a children’s paradise.

I’m really pleased with this painting, in particular the way the composition has come together. There’s the entrance to Claremont through the underpass. You can see the Claremont Quarter and the railway line. The village and the river are seamlessly connected in the soft morning light. Just follow the road down to the water. What I’m offering here is a fresh perspective on the familiar. We know these places but now we see them brand new.

In this painting of Claremont, I’ve used colourful rows as metaphors for both houses and people – our community living together, connected and separate. Each person has their jewel-like colour and when you draw together all these colourful individuals, that’s when you get the vibrancy of village life. This is a homage to places created by the striving of individuals who live and work there.

This painting is about Freshwater Bay, while Claremont and the surrounding suburbs cluster around the edge of the waterway like some modern version of a fishing village. I’m having some fun with the details of Claremont. The underpass, the big shops, the old hotel and the railway. I love the Claremont village, and dabbling it with the light, lines and movement. I love this gentle little corner of the world.

This is a sunset on the water. It’s meant to be after work, maybe 5:30, when you go down there in the summer. There are thunderclouds over the hills reflecting the sunset light down into the water. It is very restful at the end of the day. There’s a tranquillity about the boats moored there facing into the sea breeze. This is a wonderful place to live. It nourishes. Whatever troubles you have in your life, you can remember happiness by taking in this beautiful place.

This painting is about the blues and enchanting greens of Margaret River and the water lilies. Nestled in among the trees, the town is a seamless blend of buildings and landscape. There are no hard edges to the place and I think that’s why people love the feeling of being there. It’s gentle and generous and a reminder that we are refreshed whenever we are close to nature.

The city is where our society is protected and given form and shape. You can see the old Treasury Building, the Cathedral and the Perth City Council. Many of these places make the world kinder. There will always be corrupting elements, yet still, there are also good lawmakers and people who can write effective legislation. There will always be competent people who devote their lives to making society stronger.

I feel a lot of excitement when I look at this work. I like the lights of a big city. For me, the city is about civilisation and architecture. It is also about things like government, health, education, our legal system and everything that’s worthwhile in society. The city is where all the power resides and things are kept stable.
