Sometimes I’m overwhelmed by the beauty and abundance around us. If ever there was a single place on earth where the best of life is on offer, it’s here.

Living With Our Whole Hearts by Ken Rasmussen

Living With Our Whole Hearts

People might sometimes feel disappointed. Or that they sometimes have to compromise too much to get on, to be in business. They might feel a sense of limitation and sacrifice. Yet here we are in this wonderful place. I want to expand people’s view of Perth and invite them to fall in love again with where they live. This is a large painting that shows the vast metropolis of Perth, looking from the north over the forest and lakes and playing fields of our green northern suburbs. The Perth CBD is flanked by the Swan River, which joins with the Canning River to make its gentle way to the Indian Ocean. Looking down the coast, you can see from City Beach to Cottesloe and Fremantle, and down to Garden Island and beyond, right down to the beautiful jetty at Busselton and the lighthouse at Cape Naturaliste.

Longing For Play

Oil on Linen Painting
Dimensions 915 × 1830 mm

This painting is about how we’re part of a bigger world with the complexity of bridges, houses and busy places. There is this longing in all of us to find the playful space. There’s the shallows, the Ferris wheel, rainbow colours and the beach. This is about the childhood spirit, that resides in all of us.

I love the sound of Rokeby Road in Subiaco because it sounds like Rocky Road. The thing I love about streets like this is that they tend to attract really talented bakers, cake makers and baristas. There are bookshops and a more relaxed pace. Boucla has always been my favourite cafe.

This landscape painting shows the city of Perth. You can see the beach stretching up from Fremantle through Cottesloe and beyond City Beach, Rottnest and the Swan River up to Freshwater Bay. The forests, lakes, houses, schools and playing fields of the city’s north west span the horizon. The city is dynamic, with people and families flowing in and out all of the time, symbolised by houses gently floating in and out of view. This painting is about being part of an aspirational community where a culture of learning is celebrated, lighting up our hopes and dreams for the future.

This is Rottnest, Cottesloe, Perth city and the waterways. I painted them with a very gentle, buttery, soft sunlight. It caresses like a soothing, sort of balm. There’s a restfulness, the ships in port, fully loaded, sitting heavy in the water. I’m reflecting on the calmness and tranquillity here.

Perth is a metropolis of the river and ocean, water flows all around us. We love the warmth and sunlight. At the heart of our city is the Sun Temple, the iconic Indiana Tea House and famous Cottesloe Beach building that serves as a monument to our love of the sun. Here is where we give thanks for the freedom and safety of this place.
