This painting is about that feeling of looking out at the ridges and hills and peaks and how that view tends to soften in the distance. It’s an enticing landscape to wander in. At the right time of the year, when there’s water, it is as fun and full of interest as a theme park.

The Marble Bar is the area in the middle and the Marble Bar Pool is there too. It’s absolutely wonderful to swim there. It’s so lovely to sit and look up at those hills with the different colours, the reflections in the water and those nibbling spangled perch.

This is the Marble Bar, in north west Australia. Flying Fox Pool is there in the background. There’s a flying fox post from the actual flying fox that’s there. The spinifex produces a stalk that’s over a metre high, with seeds at the top. It waves in the breeze and it’s a wonderful sight.

The light here is really bright and the colours are vivid. It’s a funny feeling to stand in the dark shadows and to look out into the intensity of the stunning landscape with its Snappy Gums. I found the feeling of being there overwhelming and powerful. It is such an impressive place that leaves you feeling elated, especially at dawn and dusk.

You only have to see a stockman, his horse and working dog to see what a connected team they are. These dogs are such a such an endearing mix of character, competence and companionship. I’ve tried to capture the happiness of a working dog doing exactly what they are bred for.
