Perth Paintings
Perth - Kingdom of the Brave.
Risks are taken, plans are made, achievements are celebrated.
Perth is strength, determination and spirit.
Soaring office towers reach for the sky, push themselves harder, reach further.
These beautiful, original oil paintings of Perth by Ken Rasmussen capture the drama.
The art and thrill of the big play.

This painting is about a place that gives us stability and a solidness to the principles of law and the rules of life. You can see that in the layering. There are layers of things that make up civilisation and make things on which we can depend. There’s tremendous investment in education and processes. I’m paying homage to the layers of time and work that go into making historical progression.

I am struck by the majesty of this city, set against the river and the vastness of the sea.

This painting is all about the nightlife in Perth. You can see the city lights and headlights of cars as people move around the city. That’s why Northbridge is in the foreground because it has such vibrancy. I used to live just off to the right in West Perth and would walk to the city at night. It was a thrill for me because the movement and rhythm of car headlights would be illuminating the streets. To an artist like me, these waves of light are really something.

The Swan River flows between the twin cities of Perth and South Perth, out into an expansive waterway. There are layers of detail in the cities – gold has a magical, enchanting quality, and there are rich blues and purples. There is a storybook quality to the city, to the places we see every day and have a great fondness for.

I used to live in West Perth, and I had a view of the city. I remember even when the lights go out, the buildings still glow in the moonlight. I’ve seen the city at 3.00am with a full moon casting a beautiful light.

These are monuments to courage and striving. A landscape of risk and benefit. So many days of effort and uncertainty. I see tremendous bravery in the building of this place. I feel the optimism of people and their future.

The towers of Perth’s CBD are ever rising and reaching.

City Morning Colours |

This painting looks over the city of Perth towards the North in the early morning. I’m pleased with the varied colours that I used in the sky. I’m interested in the complexity and energy of living in this place with all its life and potential. The North is underestimated.

I remember feeling so happy as I was painting this. I was trying to simplify things. You can see the sea breeze on the water. The painting also captures how we can live in this very dense urban environment alongside open waterways that are teeming with life. This brings an important balance between nature and our urban life in the city.

Like the city itself, there’s a lot of strength and warmth in this painting. You can feel the solidness of what’s been built with so much effort and striving. You can see South Perth and around to Nedlands.

This is about the golden times that ebb and flow over the city. The place sparkles with optimism and activity. The colours are brighter and the river takes your breath away. It is important to celebrate good times in order to be carried through times that aren’t as easy.

South Perth is sitting there just across the water from all the towers of commerce and striving. People travel over to the city and then go home again. I’m wanting to show people a fresh perspective on where they live and work. I’m hoping to bring that landscape alive. People may never have considered the relationship between the city and South Perth from this view. I hope they can feel some of the magic in all this life by the river.

This painting shows Perth and South Perth at about one or two o’clock, mid-afternoon. I’m looking down over the city from Kings Park. It’s a lovely view full of success stories, peoples homes and the river. This view always fills me with hope for the future. You get the sense of order and prosperity from all that has been built up over time.

I love the grandeur of city architecture. Enormous statements of power that tell so many stories. I think of all the hands that made these structures. I think of all the people who work there. So many people, so many families, all connected to the shape of this city.

I often reflect on how lucky we are to live in such a peaceful city. There are so many views out across the river. I love the tranquillity of it. To me, the city towers speak of prosperity and growth from which so many benefit, directly and indirectly. Rent is paid, people are fed. It’s not something we should take for granted.
