Rottnest Island Paintings

Celebrate the days of summer. Storybook times when life slows down and children play as if the day will last forever. Quiet nights, bright stars and the gentle sound of boats moored close to the shore.

Art helps you remember that feeling of freedom and simplicity.

These original oil paintings of Rottnest Island can take you back there. Every day.

You’re looking across Applecross and Nedlands over to Cottesloe. You can see Kings Park and the university. This sweeping eagle’s view takes in Fremantle and Rottnest. It’s mid-afternoon on a summer day. There is a sense of emotional ownership over these lovely places and the memories they hold for us.

This painting shows a view of where you’re looking back at Rottnest at night. It reminds me of the jetty at Thomson’s Bay and the sea wall. I was inspired to paint this by a photo of Venice at night. I love this painting because it reminds me of the times I’ve spent at Rottnest with my family.

This is the way a child experiences Rottnest. It’s not so much about the island itself. It’s all about moving from one fun place to another. I am highlighting a hundred beautiful, exotic bays, different headlands, different places to go swimming. This is a child’s map of holiday fun.

This painting tells a story about Cottesloe, a village between the life giving waters of river and sea.Lines of Norfolk pines stand around the tea house and along Broome Street, and the railway line runs through on its way down to Fremantle. Mosman Bay is calm, with its jetties and small boats at anchor. Looking out over the ocean to Rottnest, you can see the container ships anchored in Gage Roads, and the kite surfers dance along South Cottesloe beach. The name of this painting was inspired from a poem by Rumi: “We feel the flowing water of life here, you and I, with the garden’s beauty and the birds singing”.

It is early afternoon and you are looking out across Point Walter, Keynes Point and Cottesloeover to Rottnest. The sea breeze is blowing the clouds overhead. You can see Claremont and the black forest of pines in Cottesloe. This is a generous place of water and trees and people finding their way.

Here are two places that so many of us go to escape our routine. And relax. To me, the ships are our problems that can loom large when they are up close. Time and perspective sees them retreat to dots on the horizon.

A friend commented that this painting was a riot. That is exactly what I was after. I wanted to capture all the elements that excite and delight us in this landscape. What a wonderful and adventurous place Rottnest is. The passing ships are so mysterious with their colourful stacked containers. There’s the magic of Cottesloe Beach, whales, lighthouses and the movement of the clouds. And the metropolis of Fremantle, busy with its port, trains and excitement, watched over by Dingo. These places awaken my childhood sense of wonder.

There’s yellow Rottnest with the sun shining down and reflecting across the water. At the bottom of the picture, you can see the reef. The Dingo Flour logo means a lot to me because it reminds me of flour, flour bags, cooking scones, domesticity and caring for people. I had a lot of fun painting those clouds in this work. I love how clouds change. As they come and go, your view of the world is altered. I enjoy how all this movement plays out over the water. I am reminded of how bad times cloud over and block the light. They move away and things feel lighter once again. In this painting, I became very interested in textures on the surface of the water. In this painting, the whales are under the surface of the water as an outline.

Here are the enchanting landmarks that take us back to childhood and wonderment. It is a summer day. You are still while the clouds and water move around you. The building in the top right is the old salt store. Ever since I was a child this has always struck me as a funny sort of building. The reason the houses are painted like this is that over my life each one is like a book or a place. They’re individual destinations. You look down into the water and it is filled with fishes and rhythms and patterns.

I’ve seen parties and party products delivered to Rottnest. I’m making a simple statement that Rottnest is an excellent place for children. I’ve loaded up the container ships with presents just for fun. My children loved being over at Rottnest. At the bottom of the painting, you can see the pine trees of Cottesloe. My favourite part of this picture is the clouds. I just loved painting them.

You’ve got to be a local person to understand why the Dingo Flour logo is there. Maybe it’s as simple as the fact when you drive down the road, and you see the Dingo thing it is tremendous. It stands out. There aren’t many places in the world where something like this has evolved. I love the Dingo Flour dingo because it reminds me of is flour, flour bags, scones, cooking and caring for people.

This is a view of the city of Perth over Rottnest. We are looking back across Cottesloe over to the city, the Swan River and Canning River and their bridges – the Narrows Bridge, Guildford Bridge, the Canning Bridge and Mt Henry Bridge, and the Fremantle Bridge. It is mid afternoon. Visiting Rottnest Island takes us back to that sense of wonder we had as a kid. We stand on the island and look back to where we’ve come from. We forget our turmoil and troubles. The beauty of the day is all there before us.

This is about the vibrant village life of Applecross. Meeting up at cafes is part of the experience of living around the edges of the river. I’ve painted the Applecross jacaranda trees like clouds of butterflies. Flowers float in the breeze from the water.

This is about kids and their beach holidays. There are the whales coming in for a visit past Cottesloe and Rottnest. You can see the Dingo Flour sign, lighthouses and even the pretend smugglers cave at Bathers Beach. Giant cargo ships cruise in and out of the harbour. Really this is a children’s paradise.
